Japan Day 4

Whoo, today was tiring.

It was our free day today, which was fairly exciting. Unfortunately it wasn't quite as free as I thought it would be, since we were forced to go in groups of 15 to specified places with chaperons.

So I went to Shibuya and Ueno. Unfortunately it was raining the whole day, which kind of put a dapener on things.

Shibuya is a shopping district with lots of department stores on the main road and a few side roads lined with boutiques. Didn't buy much.

Then we went to Ueno park and hung out at the Science museum because it was raining. We just....ate lunch and visited the museum store. That was it, mostly.

We came back soaked and tired, and then went out on the town around Shinjuku for dinner. I bought more Moyashimon stuff.
I saw some bags, but I didn't think they were pretty enough. so yeah.

Tomorrow I really need to find a store selling anime goods besides just moyashimon figurines. Seriously.

Japan Day 3

I'm too tired to put pictures in, so I'll just put in a video at the end.

So today, we rehearsed with a youth orchestra from Tokyo in a combined rehearsal for one of our pieces we're playing in the next concert.
The second bassoon guy was pretty cute :D We didn't get much time to socialize with them, though. We played through the songs then went straight to the bus.

Lunch was odd. We had bento box things that had sandwiches and 2 pieces of sushi. I'm seriously getting sick of Japanese sandwiches. They're kind of gross. We ate at a park that had no benches. Then all the guys tried to show off by doing pull-ups. Some things never change.

After lunch was the MOST ADORABLE THING EVER.
OH MY GOD.
We did an exchange thing with an elementary school where we went there and played some songs with them, except THEY COMPLETELY PUT US TO SHAME. Dear lord, they were amazing.

THEY MARCHED IN FORMATION, MEMORIZED A REALLY LONG PIECE, PLAYED WELL, AND THERE WERE 2 FREAKING MARCHING BASSOONS. It was so amazing

Aaaaahhhhh

THEY WERE SO CUTE.

And they sang for us too! And aaaaaaaah. Even if I say I don't like little kids, LITTLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLERS MARCHING WITH BASSOONS are too much for me to handle.

So after that bit of adorableness, we loaded the buses and drove away while they chased the bus.

So after that, we went to an amusement district with a giant ferris wheel and a shopping mall. We ate dinner at the mall in the food court. I had fresh takoyaki, and it was delish. So amazing.

Except then we were late so we ran to the ferris wheel, but it was too late D:

So we played games in the arcade. TAIKO DRUM GAME IS SO AMAZING

And then we took the JAPANESE SUBWAY home. Whee!

Japan Day 2

We watched a tea ceremony (it took about 15 minutes) and then we had rehearsal.

For 4 hours.

And then we ate tuna pizza with corn and ham from Pizza Hut. It was strange.

And then we had a concert. For 3 hours.

I was too exhausted to move, but then we had a japanese and music trivia contest on the bus ride back, courtesy of our conductor, and then we went back to the hotel and told scary stories. Yep.

Not a very exciting day.

Japan Day 1 (picture heavy)

So, first full day in Japan!

Some basic rundowns. I've decided that I'll post pictors. Yay pictors.

Woke up at 6:30ish. I slept extremely well! I'm surprised.
Breakfast at hotel. It was pretty awesome; all you can eat, nice food, etc
Well, their eggs were a little sketchy, but that's okay. Miso soup for breakfast ftw. Ate a big breakfast to make up for smaller portions at lunch and dinner.

(Our bus was yellow. I took a lot of bus pictures.)

First place we visited was the Imperial palace area. It's not open to the public, so yeah. We just took pictures of the guard towers and stuff like that. Not that exciting.

(bona-fide Japanese hobo!)

After that, we went to another shrine! This time it was a Buddhist shrine. It was pretty busy, since it was right in the middle of Tokyo (Asakusa neighborhood). We walked around a bit, and saw some pretty awesome shrines. We also ate lunch there; I had this delicious bowl of Udon. Awesome udon. Like, amazingly amazing. I love udon.

A dude at the shrine doing squats because his dog was doing squats, if you know what I mean

EGG UDON. ¥700! DELICIOUS!

I also got a moyashimon keychain at one of those toy vending machines with the capsules. IT'S SO ADORABLE AND SQUISHY.
Also, Hawk, do you still want a bag? I saw some nice ones here.

After the Buddhist shrine was the Shinto shrine, which was a lot quieter and more deserted looking since it was the middle of the day. It was in the middle of a freaking forest. In the middle of Tokyo. What?

(kegs of French wine in the middle of the forest to the Shinto temple)

NEXT we went to Harajuku! I was so excited! I really wanted to see Harajuku because it's awesome, except it was raining while we were there, so I didn't get to see as many strangely dressed people as I would have liked. I'll go back when the weather gets better.
BUT I did find a store selling anime goods, so I bought more Moyashimon merchandise and a Gurren Lagann action figure (that was almost half the price as it was at Fanime). Pretty awesome.
Socks with pandas for toes at a store in Harajuku!

After Harajuku, we went back to the hotel and I practiced bassoon. Kind of. Dinner was an interesting affair of convenience store sushi, melon bread, and pudding. Not bad, I must say, and it cost less than lunch.
Tomorrow we have a concert (blaaaaaaah) and we get to learn flower arranging. yey. hooray.

PS: Don't you love how I didn't actually post any pictures of the landmarks?

Whoot

Quail is in Japan!

And is falling asleep!

More forthcoming!

Oh yes

And a minor addendum.

To my great chagrin, I must announce that those fans eagerly following this blog must wait until August for pictures/news about IKEA.

Now you may all rot in suspense.

I say goodbye....

Hai guys.
Zomg such a fast followup post from the lazy, awkward hawk!

Well I'm leaving tomorrow and I just wanna leave you guys with something to remember me by :)

I read an article in Time about how fat American kids are. Look at our lifestyle. Hanging out at Starbucks, eating McDonald's all the time... becoming reliant on computers and spending less and less time biking and rolling down grassy hills...Diabetes, obesity, and heart attacks are rampant. Granted, skinny is not always healthy either. The thing is though, in a country surrounded by so many high-calorie temptations, being skinny usually means the lifeguard at the gene pool was unusually attentive or that the skinny person worked hard for their body. While the media is lampooning the overweight and bringing the skinny up for admiration or attention(ex. Nicole Richie and Angelina Jolie), society is trying to make people realize how beautiful they are despite public opinion. Rather inconsistent.

Looking at teen heroes like Hannah Montana and Vanessa Hudgens makes girls especially hate themselves. Not everyone has the genes for C cups and size 0 butts. But lately plus-sizers have become more prominent. The lead of Hairspray, for instance, gets the supposedly hot Zac Efron. The lead girl of Camp Rock (plotless drivel though it is) is not ridiculously beautiful or skinny in any way. She even has a slight buttchin. Cory in the House is led by the plus-size Kyle Massey, and Raven of That's so Raven definitely can't hula-hoop with a Cheerio.

It's great that Disney is trying to show that big can be beautiful. But at the same time, is it a form of idolizing what ought to be changed?

...

Quail is thoroughly exhausted from work compounded with bassoon practice for the upcoming tour.

Whew, it's amazing how great it feels to be tired after being (kind of ) productive all day.

A few tips for Hawk: Watch your laundry in the laundry room! Move it from the washer to the dryer and then back to your room so that you don't stop up the washing machines and so that people don't steal your clothes (that happened at CSSSA). Also, don't set the dryer too hot, otherwise your clothes will shrink. Not fun.

Bring lots of snacks! When you're back in your dorm, you get hungry. Especially if the shops are far and the cafeteria is closed. Also, don't put your food in the same place you put your bag of laundry detergent.

Hmm, if you have dorm-mates, be sure to get along with them.
Introduce yourself to everyone and don't be afraid to come off as strange!
Bring sandals. Well, unless you think you don't need them.
Don't forget a cellphone charger and stuff like that! And your laptop if you're bringing it :D

Otherwise....HAVE FUN, WORK HARD, PLAY HARD, AND UPDATE THE BLOG EVERY DAY! Or at least every other day. I dunno, you could keep a food report?

So, have you gotten a pretty bag yet? And didja get shoes?

Oh wow, Quail hasn't watched TV in years. Crazy.

So now a little update about Quail.

CYS practice right after work makes Quail really drained. Also, her bassoon was incredibly out of tune all three days because it was crazy hot.

She still has to pack for Japan

After that initial productivity spike at work, the productivity level has fallen to all-time lows. Now she plays tetris with magnetic wooden blocks and hangman with her co-intern. Also, we have 3 people in a cubicle, which means that all three people are trying to work on the same program at the same time. Crazy.

CRAZY FUN, YOU MEAN!

She still has to write an unpleasant email.

She needs to draw stuff. Lots and lots of stuff.

Won't meet her supervisor for another 2 weeks, in which time all the other interns will be hard at work on their projects D:

Is tired and needs to play more bassoon.

ALSO:
HAAAAAAWWWWWK! What's the status update on IKEA?

SHOP! In the name of looooove

Goodness Quail. I hadn't realized that although I check this blog every day, I almost never write on it D:. I can probably attribute that to laziness or summer burnout.

I mean, you wouldn't think it was possible to get tired of too much fun, would you?
But after the last four days of last week all I wanted to do was sit on the couch and watch pointless reality television. Yayy.

And go shopping. A lot. Because you see, I have never left home for six weeks before o_o. I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to the traveling far thing. I've never been out of the U.S., and the farthest I've been from home other than the necessary Washington D.C. trip in 8th grade was Chicago. And both of those were for less than a week.

Here we have six weeks, where I will be doing my own laundry (shock) and who knows what else. Coupled with my lack of experience, I expect that means I'll be forgetting a LOT of things at home ._.; Look for developments about that..starting Sunday! :D

Anyway, I've recently developed an obsession for LeSportSac and Vans. My current shoes are so flat that I keep stepping on my jeans and ruining them :(. And these were faithful jeans that lasted for two years and probably would have survived more. Sniff. And who knew the LeSportSac was so expensive? T_T. Oh, for a cheap asian bag store.

I'm incredibly digressional this morning. Well, I stayed up until 3 last night watching Fresh Prince, Dinner: Impossible, and Disney channel.

Yes, I like Disney and I'm not afraid to admit it! Buaha.

Hawk is finally taking her permit test tomorrow.
She better not fail, because then that means another seven-week delay. Sigh.

In the meantime, she shops for cute travel-size laundry soap.

W = F x d

Work!

First day of work was quite exciting....except....not really

First half was security clearance and badge-getting. And more clearance. And stuff.
But then we ate at In-N-Out!
But then we had another 3 hours of orientation and touring and paperwork.

And then we actually got to do some stuff!

Hooray for crash courses for programming?

Also, Hawk, you have to post more, dear. I'm feeling lonely in this blog all by myself....

It's hideous!

Hot pink plaid board shorts. That's all I'm going to say.

Oh, and WE FINALLY GET TO TAKE HAWK TO IKEA : D

Edit: Plans foiled. Darn.

Beeeeeep!

First day of summer! TIME FOR EPIC ROOM CLEANING!

And today is Friday the 13th. Hooray

*Yawn*

I've been plotting an insanely insightful, philosophic post for a while. But this is not the time, is it?

Quail rocks. I loves my new shirt :D
But currently it is a bit gross from all the DDRing and biking and quiz bowling.

More to come tomorrow.
I'd like to leave you all with the thought that nothing is better than coming home at midnight after having spent a whole day with friends (and not-so-friends, but who cares about them?).

Thursday, June 12, 2008

Once we rock, the fun don't stop.

Oh wow, so exhausted I could collapse into an unmoving heap and hibernate for the rest of summer. Seriously, today was an awesome day.

Long awaited DDR DANCE PARTY. HAH. YES. 4 pads, 6 people, 2 consoles. Awesome fun. I wish we could have hooked up all 4 to one console though....

Oh well.

Lots of delicious food, lots of delicious drinks, and lots of awesome (but maybe not as delicious) people.

Hawky dear also got her AWKWARD HAWK shirt that I made last night after slacking off so long. We ROCK THE HOUSE. LITERALLY.

And SUMMER SUMMER SUMMER

And my bassoon reeds got here! Yaaaaaaay

And work is on Monday

And I'm going to make a Moyashimon plushie just because I can!

And and and.....

Life rocks.

Tuesday, June 10, 2008

The forecast for today is happy with a chance of productivity

Quail is very happy :D

She has no finals today (Tuesday), and her teachers are awesome, so she doesn't have to go to school!

yeys

Now all that's left is to make Hawk her shirt so we can have a pair of dorky bird shirts. YES!

Piffling Ponderance

Hawk wonders why she is busting her butt writing a report for a class that her grade is not in any danger in instead of studying for a final that could determine her grade.

She concludes that this is why it sucks to be a selective perfectionist.

~sin/cos~
Four more days. An eternity.
And two weeks until Davis. So short.
Einstein had a point.

Yippee

NO MORE STANDARDIZED TESTING FOR ANOTHER YEAR.

YESSSSS.

*happy dance*

Strange Love

Dr. Strangelove is the most bizarre movie. Ever.

And I hate the SAT IIs.

"I see"...

...said the blind man, as he picked up his hammer and saw.

Since we seem to have a special on punny jokes, I thought I'd join in.

Anyway, as Hawk is sitting there (or rather, roosting there) stressing out about grades or stressing out about not stressing out, Quail is still quite confused. Ah, the joys of time disassociation. I am quite aware that the end approaches, but nothing has sunk in yet.

All I know, is that MOST OF MY PROJECTS ARE DONE, and I ONLY HAVE 1 FINAL.

Except.

I have no concept of when finals week is, which is wonderful. For future reference for myself, it is NEXT WEEK.

Since it's almost summer, I guess listing out summer plans would be appropriate?
First off, summer internship at Lockheed. Yay, I actually get a salary. I hope it's enough to pay for the Italy trip for art next year and leave some spending cash for me (to spend on cosplay next Fanime.....)
Next, going to Japan with CYS on the 23rd for 2 weeks. Yay! I have to buy stuff for people when I'm there xD
Third: More CYS camp. CYS takes a lot of summer time D:
4th: One week CYS camp in the woods. Fun stuff
5th: Remember to do summer physics homework.

....Not a very exciting summer. Except for the traveling part!

Anyway, Hawk dear, don't forget to blog often if you don't sign on when you're doing your thing!

"The end is near."

So said the overenthusiastic evangelist as his car skidded off the edge of the broken bridge.

Yeah, you've heard that before, huh?
Sorry.

Stagnation has become a part of life. There's only one more week of school left, but when is it going to come?! The hours are disappearing like the trail mix from the vending machines--slowly and only when some stupid kid accidentally punches in the wrong number for a Grandma's cookie. (I know this from experience, yes.)

Seriously. School was over for the mass populace of the upperclassmen after the end of APs.
Why, then, did my math teacher give us a pop quiz? Why is my physics teacher attempting to teach (and with even less success than usual) and even giving us a final tomorrow?

Not like anyone is ready for the test. Not like anyone is going to study, do their homework, or even try to pay attention in class instead of dreaming about the summer.

Face it. There is no point in prolonging school when no one attending it is remotely motivated anymore.

This is the time of the year when the hard work of the previous five months becomes useful as a cushion. This is the time when acquiring only the bare minimum grade for a threshold A becomes the standard norm among overachievers. This is when you can turn, smirking, to your friend and claim, "I only need a 61% on the final to get an A. F--- studying!"

Precisely.

Except a large portion of grades are still determined at this point, with only 6 days of school left. Grades on the borderline are being decided with every careless move in class. Every thirty seconds spent watching the clock or picking up a dropped pencil are points being deducted from the final exam.

Why NOW?
